Bark Up or Down? Firewood Splits Norwegians

Posted

New York Times, Feb 21, 2013

OSLO — The TV program, on the topic of firewood, consisted mostly of people in parkas chatting and chopping in the woods and then eight hours of a fire burning in a fireplace. Yet no sooner had it begun, on prime time on Friday night, than the angry responses came pouring in. In a country where 1.2 million households have fireplaces or wood stoves, the subject naturally lends itself to television. “We received about 60 text messages from people complaining about the stacking in the program,” said Lars Mytting, whose best-selling book “Solid Wood: All About Chopping, Drying and Stacking Wood — and the Soul of Wood-Burning” inspired the broadcast. “Fifty percent complained that the bark was facing up, and the rest complained that the bark was facing down.” KEEP READING >>

A client asked what those doors are called where you can load the wood from the outside, and then unload the wood from the inside, so I went online and found this photograph. If it can be built so as to keep out bugs and burglars, it would be a really great idea! See Hearth.com for more information...

LINWOOD — If you can’t find wood pellets to burn to heat your home this winter, you can take comfort in knowing that our abundant supply went to overseas markets. Or, maybe you wouldn’t find that comforting.

Picking trees off houses all day. Check out the chipper photo. 140 Hp snowcone maker! Only one flavor today (pine tree). Truck had as much ice in it as chips. Arrived home and still no power at the Comer house! Two holes in my roof and one wing of barn crushed. At least I know a good tree company 😃 Had to grab a shower at a friends house. 80 degrees in front of fireplace and 47 degrees in my office. Oh the things we take for granted...Heat, Hot Water... While out with a landowner the other day on his farm near Neodesha he pointed out this big old sycamore to me. The big hollow was full of honeycomb (and bees!) It was so neat I just had to share. Just one of the many wonders I get to see frequently in our Kansas woodlands.

Firewood burning tip #13, never burn treated lumber like 2x4's or other drops from the deck or other project. Treated lumber is full of chemicals and even heavy metals.

This is a wonderful, short European-focused video about how wood is a far better building material than concrete, steel or any kind of plastic or composite because it uses so little energy (and toxic chemicals) to make, and then can be recycled - or turned into energy.
